Gift #45 Yehuda Moon and the Kickstand Cyclery
October 28, 2009
Here’s how our morning starts—a mug of coffee and Yehuda Moon.
Yehuda Moon and the Kickstand Cyclery is a daily comic strip created by Rick Smith. It follows the daily (mis)adventures of one, Yehuda Moon, proprietor of the Kickstand Cyclery—a bike shop that’s as much about advocating for alternative/sustainable means of transportation as it is about turning a profit (always a struggle for Yehuda).
Many of us who use bicycles as our primary means of transportation have found a hero in Yehuda Moon. In a society and culture dominated by the automobile, Yehuda is perceived by many as radical, subversive, and a bit of a wing-nut—”what do you mean you bike in the winter?” But for the growing tribe of self-propelled people, Yehuda is a big dose of daily inspiration. Us crazy folk need each other.
Even though Yehuda in his regular diatribes against the car-centric culture, comes off as a curmudgeon, he’s really an idealist and an optimist. He just gets a bit frustrated that the vision many of us share is so slow in coming to fruition. But Yehuda, unlike anyone we know, really practices what he preaches. His vision of a world liberated of fossil-fuelled transportation is a change he chooses to embody everyday. And he has a lot of fun doing it.
Today’s comic is a treat. We also love plowing our bicycles through the fallen leaves—bliss!
We salute Yehuda Moon and creator Rick Smith. May our gift to you be a small sign of the great gratitude we feel for having Yehuda Moon in our lives every morning. Thank-you.
