October 29, 2009
Ah vinyl.
In a corner of my soul is an old turntable. I dust it off once in a while to remember—winter twilight, a gentle snow, sitting in an armchair with a glass of Merlot. First the scratch and crackle of a needle spanning the void. Then Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto 2 slowly coming to life, note after note filling our candle-lit den.
Sadly, I shipped the old turntable and vinyl records off to Sally Ann. I regret it now, boy do I ever. Ipods and MP3’s just don’t have the same humanity, character, pulse—I think.
Vinyl never died. It’s currently enjoying a renaissance among music lovers. Here are a few places to find vinyl in Vancouver—
If you found today’s Guerrilla Gift, may your day crackle with vinyl verve and life!
BTW, the album in the store window is “Why Look for Good Times?” from Vancouver’s The Rodney Graham Band. Good stuff.
